Introductory statement
IMPROVE is an innovative project funded by the Horizon Europe programme, which aims to evaluate the nutritional, health, safety, and environmental impacts of novel protein foods from unconventional sources like agri-food by-products, fungi, bacteria, insects, and (micro and macro) algae. By optimizing production processes and testing feasibility at industrial scales, IMPROVE seeks to enhance sustainable protein alternatives and assess their acceptance in global markets, supporting a healthier, environmentally friendly food future.
About the Project
The Call
for Change:
A Shift Towards Sustainable Diets
We need to change our eating habits towards more sustainable and healthier choices. This change should involve everyone, making each person an agent of change. A sustainable food system should protect the environment, provide nutritious food, and support social values and health. Adopting alternative proteins and sustainable diets aligns with the goals of the European Green Deal, which is crucial for a healthier and more sustainable future.
Improve:
Pioneering the Future of Protein Production
IMPROVE aims to evaluate the benefits of alternative protein sources, focusing on reducing emissions, minimizing environmental impact, conserving water, and ensuring effective waste management. This comprehensive approach will help determine how feasible and sustainable these new proteins can be within a circular economy. IMPROVE will provide a thorough overview of the challenges, solutions, and technologies related to protein production, offering clear and reliable predictions about the future of food, backed by data and demonstrations that resonate with stakeholders and the public.
From Waste
to Resource:
A Circular Food System
IMPROVE is all about finding new ways to use resources more efficiently, helping create a food system that is both sustainable and circular. By reducing waste and making the most of alternative protein sources, we aim to make food production better for both people and the planet.
Aligning with European and Global Sustainability Goals
Our approach is aligned with important European and global initiatives:
The European Green Deal:
A plan to make Europe’s economy sustainable by turning climate and environmental challenges into opportunities.
Farm to Fork Strategy:
Part of the European Green Deal, this strategy promotes fair, healthy, and eco-friendly food systems.
EU Climate Ambition for 2030 and 2050:
Targets to reduce emissions by 55% by 2030 and achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs):
Global goals aimed at creating a better future, tackling issues like poverty, inequality, and climate change.
Circular Economy Action Plan:
A plan to reduce waste and make Europe’s economy more resource-efficient.
Working Together for a Healthier,
More Sustainable Future
The IMPROVE project is dedicated to enhancing the planet's health, promoting sustainable food production, and ensuring a healthier future for Europe. By exploring alternative protein sources, we aim to reduce our reliance on imported meat, which helps strengthen local food systems. This initiative addresses pressing future challenges, such as hunger and diseases of affluence—like obesity and heart disease—by encouraging healthier eating habits and making nutritious food more accessible.
Additionally, our approach is economically viable. By prioritizing the use of food by-products, we aim to minimize waste and maximize resource efficiency, ultimately leading to a more sustainable food system. Together, these efforts contribute to a greener, healthier, and more economically sound future for all.
